Before Egypt is a place it is a person. Genesis 10:6 lists the sons of Ham, and מצרים is one of them, alongside Canaan, as though nations were born. JPS keeps the name as Mizraim there. From then on the Tanakh uses it for the land, the people and the two kingdoms that made up the country, and the ending -ayim, the Hebrew dual, is often explained that way. Exodus alone has 137 bare cases. Later Jewish writers heard the word for a narrow strait, מצר, inside it. Its final ם folds to an ordinary מ in a search, as every final letter does.
