Rosh Hashanah ראש השנה

The phrase stands once in the Tanakh, in Ezekiel, and it does not name the festival. The Torah calls the day something else.

The Torah has no Rosh Hashanah. It has a first day of the seventh month, a memorial proclaimed with the blast of horns in Leviticus 23:24 and a day of blowing in Numbers 29:1. The two Hebrew words ראש השנה stand together in one verse only, Ezekiel 40:1, and there they mean the start of a year, on the tenth of a month. The name belongs to the Mishnah, whose tractate Rosh Hashanah opens by calling the first of Tishrei the new year for years. So this is a phrase with almost no life in the plain text, and we search it as seven letters run together, because a sequence has no word breaks. Seven letters keep the count small enough to read, and that makes this page a fair test of how a reader looks at a result.

The measurement

The shortest sequence, skip 39 backward, runs through the verses around Leviticus 16:1, at the head of the Yom Kippur chapter. A hopeful reader would stop right there. Look at the rest first: 96 in the Torah against 83.9 by chance, and in 13 runs of 100 a shuffled Torah does as well at skips 2 to 1,000.
